WD Elements VS My Passport Ultra [REVIEW + UNBOXING] 2017-2018

WD Elements VS My Passport Ultra VS My Passport Slim

A complete breakdown on which hard disk to buy whether the My passport series or WD Elements

Check out my unboxing and review video of Western Digital - Elements 1 TB External Hard disk.

                                 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqWgSM1ubNs

Comparison between WD Elements VS My Passport Ultra VS My Passport Slim.

WD Elements ( 1TB - Price range Rs 3,900 [60$] http://amzn.to/1EfvMPK)

WD Elements is the most basic edition in there series, Considering its price a good value for money

Suitability:- People who who want a hard disk just to dumb their data, This is one of the best hard disk out there considering its price and brand value.

Features:
  • No External Power needed
  • USB 3.0 Compatible
  • Light weight (124g)

WD My Passport Ultra ( 1TB - Price range Rs 4,050 [65$] http://amzn.to/1LFyliq )

Comes in a nice fancy packaging, There is not much difference between the Elements and Ultra.
But this hard disk does come with some pre-installed software which might come in handy like Cloud back up and Hard disk encryption.

2017 March update:- WD have updated and changed their flagship model, Though specification and working still remains the same. However they have transformed style from a classic stripes design to a futuristic eye candy touch and feel, The white color Passport is an eye candy and I personally own one of these and I'm in love with it, the only drawback is the price for the My Passport - White version is the price tag, The My Passport - Black (2TB) would cost your around 7,500 rupees, however the White version would cost you around 13,000 bux! Beauty has it's price - but who knew WD would make it this pricey to obtain.

Suitability:- This would be the best option to those who use their hard disk to store important data and not just to dump there data, Using the cloud back up and password protection the user can have a back up and restrict intruders in accessing there data.

Features:
  • No External Power needed
  • USB 3.0 Compatible
  • Light weight
  • Automatic and cloud backup
  • Password protection & Security

WD My Passport Slim ( 1TB - Rs 5600 Price range Rs  [90$] http://amzn.to/1C3MWA5)

The top shot of the series, My passport slim though expensive comes with some amazing feature, Not to mention a much needed characteristic on a hard disk - METAL FINISH, That's right, Not only does this hard disk comes with a soft pouch but also a metal body, Providing a good all round protection.

Suitability:- If money isn't a barrier and if you are looking for the complete deal, This hard disk is for you. Though expensive we cannot ignore the fact that this has all the features of the above mentioned series with added physical protection which lacking with the rest.

Features:

  • No External Power needed

  4. Hello!! I use mac and my husband uses PC... can we share the same external hard drive both in the case of elements as for passport? Thanks!

  5. Hey Solana,

Most of the external hard disks out there comes with NTFS ready format, which is used by windows.
You can have this formatted to make sure its readable in Mac or Windows.

But if you are looking to toggle between Mac and windows without having to format the hard disk.
I would suggest you use external application on your mac like the Paragon NTFS for Mac.

    Hope this helped.

    2. Hi Pulkit,

There is a slight difference between WD Elements and My Passport when it comes to transfer speed.
But no difference with Mac and Windows.
Just make sure that you are using a port with USB 3.0 functionality to make optimum use of the speed.

  7. Hi Deep, good piece of information. I wish to store some extra data from PC and laptop. It consists of some videos, word files etc. On amazon.in there is a WD Elements and Toshiba Canvio Basics HDTB310AK3AA available in the same price bracket. So which would you recommend ? Thank you in advance for your advice.

    1. Hi Sam,

I do agree that both are defenitly great hard disks falling under the same price range.
But I would have to suggest WD Elements over Toshiba Canvio Basics, Simply for the fact that Western Digital is close to 33% faster then the Toshiba and WD specializes itself in storage media unlike Toshiba.

Does the new 2015 model miss out any features that are present in the old edition.

  11. Thanks for the good comparison But I am still a little confused.
So please let me know in your opinion what should I got in for.
I want to discard one of my internal harddisk and put all my work on an external hardisk so when i travel I can take it around and work on it from my laptop.
This will include photoshop Ai files and html files. Will also have the xampp(webserver) files stored on it.
Would it be the passport or elements. Also is there any benefit in performance with ultra?
    thanks

    1. Hi Raj,

I understand your confusion, I can see that you are packing in a lot of data and looking forward to use it on frequent travel as well, rather then using it like a normal back up hard disk.

In this case I would definitely suggest the new My Passport Ultra.
I personally own this, Very trendy and the added built-in Security/Back up software surely makes it a sweeter deal.
In terms of speed - Both elements and My passport ultra are very similar and the new my passport might have a slightly better edge, Nevertheless if you are using it on a USB 3.0 hub the speed is more or less lightning fast.
Do let me know if you have any further doubts.

Then should I buy ultra or save money by buying elements.?
    Is there any speed difference?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Rakesh,

I feel that you will loose the preinstalled softwares once you have conducted the re-formatting procedure, However I believe these can be downloaded off the internet from their official website.
From the current speed test, My passport seems to be the faster one when compared to it's counterpart (Elements).

I understand your frustration, However I have been using the WD My passport from more then a few years now and i have no complaints and the ones bought from my suggestions by my peers have been more then satisfied with it's performance.
Hopefully WD can put in more confidence on their products then we have on their's in the coming future.

  16. Hi Deep. I appreciate the comparison you have published and queries answered by you.
2 of my seagate ext HDDs have stopped working. So I decided to go in for WD.
I intend getting a 2TB My Passport. Is there any major difference with Ultra passport.
Can you update on any latest products WD is currently coming up with.
Also please tell me the utility of My Cloud - functionalities etc.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Kamran,

I agree, I had similar issues with my Seagate back up plus few years ago, But they did really up their game with their recent launch of Seagate 4 TB it is really brilliant and worth taking a look - http://amzn.to/1Kryh5z

If you are looking for something in the 2 TB segment then I do recommend the WD my passport - http://amzn.to/1OLrWBv as you have already selected, In terms of updates My Passport still has the new trendy look - Since the update was just a few months ago I do not feel that WD will again have a major revamp to their product until it reaches a saturation point or a downfall which doesn't seem so at this moment.

With regards to the My Cloud facility as the cloud reolution more and more data is being secured over the internet, as the name suggests you can automatically back up any files/photos over the cloud by syncing your account and hard disk. The software is pretty user friendly do let me know if you have any further doubts. For any recent upgrades on the hard disk - Do go through my latest review below:-

  18. What is the rpm of elements and ultra passport .

Also just to make sure am asking that I just want to store the data of my laptop as backup on HDD ,so elements will be sufficient.right ? Anyways if i want it protected then I can search some free softwares which locks the disk

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. HI Nikhil,

Both clocks around 5,400rpm , the speed is almost negligible when connected to a USB 3.0 port, I did notice that the Passport Ultra was a little faster then the elements, like you mentioned you could use third party software to secure your external HDD< in that case you could go for Elements - http://amzn.to/2bfziiH

  19. Hello, just wondering which one is more durable and better physical/software protection?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi ,

Please note that both elements and WD passport ultra are made up of Hard plastic, though i felt that the finishing on WD my passport ultra was classier has a better finish, in terms of software the WD elements lacks any type of protection to encrypt your drive where as My passport ultra comes with pre-installed softwares to secure your HDD, My passport would be a more suitable choice for in that case - http://amzn.to/2bfBdn4 (I would also suggest that you do get a protection pouch just in case)

  20. Hi Deep,

Can you please tell me the which is best hard disk to buy between My Passport Ultra(http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1000) and My Passport Ultra-New(http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1490) and also explain the term EESN and NESN?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Amit,

I would surely recommend the new model of My passport Ultra - http://amzn.to/2bfBdn4 (The old model will be obsolete pretty soon).

For your query regarding the terming of the device please look into the below:

      N = Sales Region: Pan-America
      E = External
      SN = Standard Packaging
So, the only difference between an EESN, a NESN, and a SESN (or any of the other xESN markings), is where the original vendor who received the drive is located.
E being Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and S being Multi-City Asia.

Hope this was helpful, do reach out to me for any further doubts.
